Senior Mechanical Engineer

Role Description

This is a full-time, in-office role located in Kansas City, MO.

The Senior Mechanical Engineer plays a critical role delivering multi-discipline power generation, process, and large industrial projects. This role is responsible for executing detailed mechanical engineering design, coordinating closely with project managers and discipline leads, and ensuring technical quality, constructability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards.

Responsibilities include performing and reviewing mechanical system design such as thermal performance, fluid flow, equipment sizing, and piping system evaluations to support project feasibility, detailed design, and system reliability. The Senior Mechanical Engineer applies advanced mechanical engineering principles to complex systems, supports development of scopes of work and execution plans, and translates analytical results into practical, constructible solutions.

This position also provides technical direction and mentoring to junior engineers and designers while supporting integrated, multi-discipline project execution.

This position reports to the Manager of Engineering and President of PPS.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform detailed mechanical engineering design for power generation, process, and large industrial facilities, including equipment sizing, specifications, piping systems, and layouts.
  • Prepare, review, and check mechanical design deliverables such as site plans, P&IDs, equipment specifications, piping layouts, isometrics, and general arrangement drawings.
  • Execute and support mechanical system calculations including equipment sizing calculations, piping wall thickness and line sizing calculations, valve sizing, and heat transfer analysis.
  • Prepare or support the preparation of construction documents for new installations and modifications to existing mechanical systems
  • Develop equipment specifications and provide technical procurement support, including vendor evaluations and factory acceptance testing
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, regulations, and client requirements
  • Provide leadership, guidance, instruction, and mentorship to junior team members

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Minimum 8 years of related experience
  • Experience in power generation, process, and/or large industrial facilities is strongly preferred, including design and construction support for piping systems, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, and rotating equipment
  • Strong technical background in fluid systems, thermal systems, and mechanical equipment design
  • Working knowledge of applicable mechanical codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API, ANSI)
  • Experience with engineering software such as AutoCAD Plant 3D, AFT Fathom/Arrow, or similar tools preferred

The Lead Electrical Engineer will serve as the technical lead on multi-discipline power generation projects, with primary responsibility for overseeing and executing detailed electrical design and electrical system studies.. This role provides leadership for key electrical design deliverables, including power system one‑line and three‑line diagrams, equipment layouts, engineering calculations, and major electrical equipment specifications. Responsibilities also include coordinating and reviewing studies such as load flow, short circuit, arc flash, protection coordination, and grounding analyses to support project feasibility, design development, and system reliability.

The Lead Electrical Engineer leads coordination of electrical design activities across disciplines, ensuring study results are effectively integrated into project designs and deliverables. Responsibilities include developing scopes of work, conceptual designs, execution plans for the electrical systems, defining study requirements, and validating analytical assumptions.

The ideal candidate is adept at interpreting complex system behavior and translating study outcomes into practical engineering solutions. Essential Job Functions

  • Lead and design electrical systems and analyze electrical data and ensure power distribution systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient power distribution system.
  • Prepare or direct the creation of construction documents for the installation of new or modifications of existing power-generating facility electrical systems
  • Provide leadership, guidance, instruction, and mentorship to junior team members
  • Regularly meet and correspond with clients, vendors, and outside stakeholders.
  • Coordinate departmental and divisional initiatives
  • Develop equipment specifications and provide technical procurement support, including witnessing factory acceptance testing for electrical equipment
  • Prepare engineering costs and man-hour estimates and schedules

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience
  • Previous work experience demonstrates progressive design and management responsibilities
  • Prior experience with design scope development, budget preparation, project execution meeting schedule requirements, and maintaining established budgets
  • Working knowledge of electrical codes, standards, rules, and regulations
  • Software experience utilizing Aeries CARS, SKM Power Tools, ETAP, SmartPlant, SmartPlant Electrical, or similar software is preferred.
  • Experience in power generating facilities, process facilities, and/or large industrial facilities including the following design types, is strongly preferred: medium voltage, low voltage, lighting, grounding, electrical equipment control, protective relaying and associated systems design and construction administration.
  • Field construction and commissioning experience is preferred.

This role is responsible for producing and overseeing detailed electrical design for both 2D and 3D deliverables.

Working closely with design engineers, other electrical designers, and multi-discipline teams, the Senior Electrical Designer will translate engineering and design concepts into high-quality design documents, perform calculations, and develop layouts for complex, non-routine assignments. The position requires proficiency in AutoCAD 3D and a strong understanding of electrical design principles, codes, and standards.

The ideal candidate will manage drawing production, incorporate design changes, and ensure quality through thorough reviews while maintaining project schedules and budgets. Essential Job Functions

  • Use AutoCAD 3D and Aeries CARS, to produce 3D models and 2D drawing deliverables including, but not limited to, underground duct banks, cable tray, AG raceway, grounding, site lighting, receptacles, equipment layouts, and hazardous areas.
  • Produce complete Electrical One-line Diagrams, Three-line Diagrams, Interconnect Diagrams, Schematic Diagrams, and Relaying Diagrams from verbal or written description from the design engineer.
  • Execute basic formulas, principles and practices, and use acquired knowledge of fundamental concepts and practices pertaining to the electrical discipline.
  • Plan and develop drawings for production work including problem analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
  • Execute variety of electrical design assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components, and refining rough sketches.
  • Execute changes to designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.
  • Analyze reports, drawings, and tests to plan and design projects.
  • Interpret and incorporate design codes and specifications related to design requirements.
  • Review design drawings for quality assurance within scope, budget and schedule. Perform projects tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.
  • Responsible for the revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information are stored in a logical and well-structured manner.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience overall as an Electrical Designer.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as an Electrical Designer for Power Plants.
  • Experience with Electrical One-lines, raceway, cable routing, and equipment layout design for power plants and boiler applications.
  • Experience with Steam and Gas Turbine Generators, 480V & 4160V Equipment, Generator Step-up Transformers, and other Power Plant Equipment.
  • Advanced understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, Aeries CARS, and Navisworks to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.
  • Advanced understanding of basic computer skills, but not limited to: Microsoft Excel, Outlook, & Bluebeam.
  • Advanced ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.
  • Advanced knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.
  • Advanced knowledge in the theory and practices of assigned discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

Manager of Electrical and Instrumentation & Controls Engineer

The Manager of Electrical and I&C will lead engineering design teams on Power Generation and Industrial projects.

Technical responsibilities include short-circuit, load flow, and motor-starting studies, ground grid design, relay protection studies, and arc flash studies. Equipment sizing calculations to include GSU and AUX transformers, Iso-phase bus duct, Generator breakers, DC battery systems and chargers, Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, and cable sizing. Preparation of specifications and bid evaluations for electrical equipment. Additional responsibilities include the engineering of one-line drawings, three-line drawings, schematic drawings, interconnection drawings, duct bank design, lightning protection design drawings, create and maintain circuit schedule database.

  • Coordinates and approves the preparation of material specifications and construction standards for electrical systems.
